Architecture of the Memorial
The whole memorial was designed in a 3D modeling computer environmental program. This memorial was built with materials pertaining to life. The is a certain gravel system called, a porous stabilized gravel system. This system allows visitors to hear there own footsteps and others at the memorial. It also allows trees to grow and thrive right through the gravel. The memorial park is surrounded by a continuous perimeter bench. Altogether there is over 2100 feet of seating throughout the memorial. Underneath each of the units is a little pool of water. There are 184 Memorial Units within the Pentagon Memorial and are located on the age line according to the year the victim was born. The age lines, showed by stainless steel strips that go across the Memorial, begin at the zero line, which spans from the Gateway to the entrance of the Memorial. Etched into the zero line is the date and time of the 9/11 attack: “September 11, 2001 9:37 A.M.” When visitors come to the Pentagon memorial they can look up a certain victim's name and birthday on something called the locator stone in the gateway of the Pentagon Memorial. There is also something call an age wall. This age wall starts at 3 inches because 3 was the age of the youngest victim to 71 inches because 71 was the age of the oldest victim. The Pentagon Memorial design was created by Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman.
